Iconic muscle car and the object of many-a-petrol head’s desires the Ford Mustang is commemorating its 50th anniversary this year.With celebrations for the car occurring all over the globe, the UK is making sure it holds its own unique tribute for the US model.
The Silverstone Classic event, to go ahead between July 25th and 27th, will see a number of Ford Mustangs from years gone by in attendance. The Mustang Owners Club selected the biggest and busiest event in historic racing as the ideal setting to continue the party.
According to the organisers at Silverstone Classic, there will be “dazzling displays, pulsating parades and dramatic demonstrations” of the muscle car at the event.
However, despite the number of extravaganzas going on during the festival, one is surely the major highlight of all proceedings.
Set to be staged on the full Silverstone Grand Prix circuit, a record number of competition-prepared Mustangs from all over the globe will take part in a rather special pair of racing events.
The models in one of these race will all conform to the FIA Appendix K technical regulations – those that are regularly raced throughout Europe in the Pre-1966 Touring Cars series – while the other will be a one-off ‘invitation class’ for more modified machines.
It is hoped that the two distinct classes will bring an even greater number of Mustangs to Silverstone.
Rachel Bailey, events manager at Masters Historic Racing, said the expected total of 25 racing Mustangs will be the largest gathering assembled on one grid.
“News about the Mustang’s 50th birthday bash at Silverstone is stirring up interest worldwide. We already have cars being shipped from the States and are also expecting several other significant entries from overseas. To see so many amazing Mustangs in action is going to be a really fitting tribute to such an iconic car,” she said.
In addition to the collection of impressive Mustangs, the event will also host a number of other ‘Yank Tanks’ from the golden era of saloon car racing. This will see Ford Falcons and Ford Galaxies making an appearance.
The 50th anniversary events at Silverstone are sure to get car fanatics even more excited about the vehicle’s release in the UK, expected some time in 2015.
UK motorists had previously had to make special overseas orders to get their hands on the machine, but a local release is sure to see those with a couple of thousand to spare flock to Ford dealerships to drive away with one. What’s all the better is the fact it will be delivered in right-hand drive.
Until the day arrives though, we’ll just have to wait patiently. At least we’ll be able to see the classic models strutting their stuff at Silverstone this summer.
