A fancy international media launch in Verona yesterday (7th June) saw the arrival of the rather impressive new FIAT 124 Spider model – and what a creature it is.
The car’s exterior has classic flair that you expect from the Italian manufacturer and it looks like a true roadster that’ll make driving on British roads feel that bit more exotic.
FIAT describes the front end of the vehicle as broad and muscular – exactly what you want from a sporty little number.
Despite looking foreboding, the 124 Spider is also elegant and its proportions are near perfect; overall it has a classic style and profile that is hard not to like.
Boosting the new model’s vintage credentials is its nose, which takes inspiration from the 1966 original Spider from FIAT.
Of course, one thing that brings the latest version roaring into the present is its engine: A 1,368cc MultiAir turbo-charged four-cylinder engine.
The variant has an output of 138 bhp and 240 Nm of torque, which is delivered to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission.
According to FIAT, the 124 Spider’s 0-62mph sprint time is 7.5 seconds and it has a top speed of 134mph.
Lots of safety devices feature on this model’s equipment package, including cruise control, a speed limiter and the seat belts have a pre-tensioner and constant-force reactor to control the degree of force into the passenger.
There are eight colours available for the bodywork, including two pastel finishes, five metallics and one that gives a pearlescent coating, which is called Urban White… no, really it is.
Trim levels include Classica, Lusso and Lusso Plus – the main benefit of the flagship version is a nine-speaker BOSE sound system.
Prices for the FIAT 124 Spider starts at £19,545 for the Classica variant and the Lusso Plus comes in at £23,295.
