The all-new Porsche 911 Targa has made its world debut at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, with the car set to add even more to the already iconic vehicle family.It has taken some ideas from the original Targa concept that Porsche introduced in the late 60’s, but the most recent incarnation of the vehicle comes with open roof technology and a more coupe-like image.
Similar features to the original model include a movable roof section above the driver and passenger, as well as a wrap-around rear window. However, the difference with the roof section is that it can be removed with the simple touch of a button, thanks to a fully automatic system.
The addition of the standard fitted Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive system helps to provide quality driving dynamics, regardless of the road or weather conditions. It delivers the same pace and nimble handling that the 911 has become so known for.
Porsche believes the latest edition of the Targa styling is a high-quality and innovative reinterpretation of the inaugural model. Furthermore, it is also similar to the 911 Carrera 4 Cabriolet when it comes to technology and body shape.
Under the bonnet is a 3.4-litre, 350hp flat-six engine. When attached to the optional extra of the Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) double-clutch transmission and Sport Chrono Package, the car is able to hit the 62 mph from standing in just 4.8 seconds, while a top speed of 175 mph can be achieved.
At the top-end of the model’s available specs, the 4S version can improve on those figures, completing 0-62 mph in 4.4 seconds and offering a top speed of 184 mph.
It is surprisingly economical too, with each sports car hitting the required standard to achieve Euro 6 certified emissions. Therefore, it offers guilt-free speed and fun!
Of course, a Porsche wouldn’t be a Porsche withoutsome luxury interior fittings. These include leather upholstery, sports seats, automatic climate control, and a 7-inch colour touchscreen connected to the Porsche Communication Management system.
This provides satellite navigation, digital radio and MP3 connectivity, Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and Porsche Traction Management (PTM) all-wheel drive.
The very first Porsche 911 Targa was unveiled at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1965, but the manufacturer has chosen a different setting to unmask its most recent model.
Its return is sure to spark a great deal of interest among petrolheads, who will want to get their hands on a model that is synonymous with Porsche’s history, but features a number of new and improved features.
And who could possibly say no to a convertible 911? Really?
