Sportscar manufacturer Porsche has announced it will be celebrating 60 years of clubs dedicated to its iconic models in 2012.

The first Porsche Club was founded in Germany in 1952 when seven passionate owners from Hohensyburg in Westphalia came together to highlight their love for the brand and their vehicles.

Back in the early 1950s it was a rarity to see a Porsche on the road. However, in 1953, the Porsche Club Belgium was founded – becoming the first international owners club for the marque.

Porsche Club Great Britain did not come into being until 1961, but over the next 51 years it has grown to become the largest club dedicated to the Porsche brand in Europe.

Today, there are 640 recognised Porsche Clubs in operation around the world, comprising of approximately 181,000 members.

As homage to the history of the brand and the dedicated members of clubs over the years, Porsche is planning a number of activities and events next month as a celebration of the outstanding support it has received over the past six decades from owners.

A special exhibition is being put on at the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart from May 26th to August 26th this year, which is set to include the 12th Porsche 356 produced in Zuffenhausen, a Porsche 968 Turbo S and a Porsche 911 Turbo Targa.

Earlier this month, enthusiasts for the perhaps less ostentatious but equally important Ford Transit helped swell the ranks of the Ford Transit Club to 1,000 members.

The club was set up in 2005 to provide lovers of the model a chance to get together and exhibit their vehicles.

"I never imagined the club would grow so quickly to reach 1,000 members," said founder Peter Lee. "I think that says everything you need to know about the Transit and its place in people's hearts."
