Two UK motorsport bodies are calling on members of the public and those working in the UK automotive industry to come together to support the upcoming National Motorsport Week.

Set to take place between June 30th and July 8th 2012, the event is to be a celebration of the past glories of UK motorsport, as well as providing an insight into the exciting future of the industry.

The Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) and Motor Sports Association (MSA) have come together to promote the annual celebrations, with a focus on highlighting the great contribution which the UK has made to global motorsport.

A few of the achievements which the bodies are keen to showcase include the fact that Britain has produced more Formula One (F1) world champion drivers than any other nation – ten in total.

Two of the last three winners have hailed from the UK – Jenson Button for Brawn in 2010 and McLaren's Lewis Hamilton the year before.

In addition, more British drivers have won the 24 Hours of Le Mans event – 32 in total – than any other nationality, including France (27).

It is achievements such as this which National Motorsport Week in the UK aims to showcase and build on.

Colin Hilton, chief executive of the UK's governing motorsport body the MSA, commented: "At a national level it allows us to celebrate our past and present successes and last year we set the ball rolling when the UK-based F1 teams opened their doors to the public.

"However, it also gives us a great opportunity to attract new people to get involved."

During the week, fans of motorsport in the UK are to be treated to the spectacles that are the Santander British Grand Prix 2012 and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.

The MSA is responsible for overseeing the 5,000-plus motoring events which take place across the UK each year, while the MIA is the world's leading trade association for the motorsport sector.
