It’s been 25 years since the original NSX was unveiled, a game-changing supercar, now its next generation is finally here and it is looking super slick.
The production version of the next generation Acura NSX was unveiled at the 2015 North American International Auto Show, having been developed and produced in the US.
It is characterised by its NSX Red finish and the growls of twin-turbocharged engine, which it showed off as it took to the stand.
The new NSX is a mid-engine sports hybrid supercar and its creators say that it will bring a “new sports experience” to the supercar segment, having been designed to challenge the current thought on supercars in the same way that its predecessor was.
It has a new power unit; a twin-turbocharged 75 degree DOHC V6 engine that is attached to a nine-speed dual clutch transmission and is complimented by a three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system. This is integrated with a rigid but lightweight body that is made out of a range of materials and put together using brand new manufacturing processes and material applications.
Senior vice president and general manager of the Acura division Mike Accavitti said: “Our commitment was to create an all-new NSX that is true to the heritage of NSX—a supercar that delivers a new driving experience, one where every part of the vehicle is respectful of the smartest part of the car, the driver.”
“The soul of a car is the emotional connection it makes with the driver. With the NSX, that connection will be intense and immediate.”
Indeed, the car is designed to put the driver at the centre of all aspects, using the hybrid supercar power unit, body and chassis to ensure response to driver inputs are intuitive and immediate.
The new NSX picked up the original tagline of its predecessor, “Precision Crafted Performance”, and applied it as its own theme during its introduction at the North American International Auto Show.
Although its look bears a few nods to the original, designers largely went from scratch when putting together the new model. It took three years of intensive development for the global design and engineering team, who were led by engineers at Acura’s Ohio development centre, to reach the finished product.
Executive vice president of the Acura Business Planning Office Erik Berkman said: “The NSX reflects Acura’s American roots and makes a powerful statement about the strong role being played by our North American operations in envisioning and building the future of Acura.”
Aspects that the new NSX takes from the original are the low and wide proportions along with its tail lights. This has been coupled with modern surfacing and a more aggressive front design.
It comes with signature side intakes and a floating C-pillar, which collects air to feed the mid-mounted engine. The design also makes airflow go over the rear deck and increases downforce.
